Out of the City, Into Las Pampas

(EE-STAN-SE-A)

After a busy week of orientation, our school group travelled out of Buenos Aires to Estancia La Cinacina in San Antonio de Areco. Feeling slightly overwhelmed with the busy, grimy city, getting out into the fresh country air was a fantastic end to the first week.  Being able to experience even just a small part of the Las Pampas region has acted as a reminder that the country and culture I have the pleasure to stay in is so much greater than only the city. It’s great motivation to continue to explore Argentina and what it means to live here.

Shadows and Lights in Buenos Aires

(BWEN-OS  AEHR-ES)

After several days of walking around the city and a security/safety seminar that stated how cameras make you a screaming target for theft, I’ve braved carrying my camera with me. Being in a new city, street photography has really taken on a new meaning. Walking the streets and just photographing anything that strikes me has brought a different feeling of ease in making images. I have been trying to break my usual standard of finding a narrative, story or moment, to just recording things of visual interest. A day at the street fair in San Telmo is less about making a set that could be a feature but fleeting observations, beautiful light, color and composition. Here are some of these images of Buenos Aires and almost magic way shadows and light move between each other in the city.

Argentina: First Views of a New Country

SPEAK AS THE NATIVES DO:  (AR-HEN-TENA)

The first few minutes in a new country are always exhilarating and filled with the kind of wonder young children likely feel on a daily basis. Being an adult or ‘grown up’, these moments don’t come as often or quite as easy for many. New places though always bring on a wave these for me and stimulate excitement with a want of discovery. As this new place of Argentina will be my home for the next four months, there’s a trace of panic mixed in with the wonder. But here I’m going to dig my heels in and focus both the panic/fear of a new place with the excitement and channel it into images. So here are a few first views of Argentina, a bit of grime, a bit of dirt, but plenty of beauty and lots of blue sky.
